Hospitals in Mauritius

One of my biggest aim is to show the public the reality of our hospitals :S

Let me first tell you a small story...
Victoria Hospital(Candos, Mauritius), where everyday several cases come, several people die...but the real reason I thk I know it now....
My story started this year in March. My mum having pains in her belly, went to see a private doc(gyne)to know the causes of that pain and was told that she was suffering from a severe fibroid disease. She was given a request form that she must show in the hospital to be able to get operated as soon as possible. Therefore, I took her to Victoria Hospital...The doctor, without doing any checkups, told her to come for another appointment in 2 months as he was going on holidays...meaning in June, and also told her that nothing was serious as there was "1 fibrone" only. Mum, happy to hear that "nthg was serious", returned home and continued to do her usual tasks. Everyday she had strange pains and bleeding continued for several weeks. After 2 months she went again for appointment with the same doc, he finally told her to get admitted the next month at 7hr in the morning so that she could be operated after 2 days. Everything prepared, mum went for her operation(stresser, afraid, nervous...). As we reach there on her admission day, we had to wait for max 2 hours to be attended as the nurses came at work at 9hr. Then we had to run here and there to know where her documents were as the NURSES didn't know where her file was !!!
Angry, I took mum to her room...la salle...and I was "SHOCKED" to hear one of the nurses, in quite a relax tone, say to my mum to sit on a wooden chair as there was no bed available...meaning not before 15hr that day....n it was only 9.30 in the morning......I just requested the lady so that she can arrange a place(pli comfortable ki sa chair la) as mum was in pain...she said "Mamzel, li bizin atan mem si li dan douleur...taler si gagne place li va assizer bien bien meme"
Tears in mum's eyes she told me to remain quiet and to return home...I did as she said but I was feeling bad ...bad because I knew mum would suffer more on that chair...
She was given a bed at 14.45hr that afternoon....for lunch...THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT SHE MUST EAT!!!! she was given some cold rice and salad when she asked them for food.
Finally after 2 days, she had to be operated...the night before her operation she was told not to eat(max 24hrs) and was given some medicines. Her doctor didn't come to visit her at all those 3 days...god knows if he knew he had to do her operation!!!
On her operation day, they placed a "la sonne" with her in the morning. We were not told at wat time the operation would be performed. At 11hr, the assistant doc came and told my mum that "nu pa pou kpv faire ou operation akoz la salle operation en reparation!!!" and they sent her home

THIS IS PUBLIC SERVICE!!!!!

Finally, I took mum to Medisave and did her operation there....the Doc there told us that mum was in last stage and in a few days the "fibrones(8 in all)" would have turned into Cancer!!!

I HATE HOSPITALS NOW...
si ti zot fami sa zot ti pou resenti li plis sa ban docteurs la ek surtou sa ban nurses la...THEY ARE REALLY IGNORANT....and MONEY MINDED!!!!
Regret that I haven't taken any pictures at that time to show u today....

I have been in and out of hospitals accompanying family members, friends etc etc and the waiting really kills. I cant imagine how patients bear that, but I think that is just the way of it. On the other hand most of the time when the nurse is taking forever and the patient have been in the room for well over an hour, feeling very vulnerable, you can hear laughing almost always or talking about things that have noting to do with patients or their illness. Sometimes the nurses are laughing and talking about their boyfriend and the doctor is either yacking about nothing or narrating the vacation that he just had and...blah blah blah. And I am thinking are these people serious?? This goes for emergency room and regular office visits...
It just makes me fume but there is not a lot we "ordinary" guys can do about it.
I think all hospitals are like this :::

Yashvin is finally doing some good job.(^_^).

Nice blog you have and a nicely written article.

Anyway, I don't go to Hospitals.

I usually go to Medisave clinic or Grand bay Medical centre or private doctors.

Hospitals sucks.
Only way for some one to have a good treatment in hospitals is to either know politician or know a doctor..

Coucou Vandu!

That's quite an awful time you people had had at the hospital. Specially mum. I hate hospitals too, most people go there for relief but whenever I set foot in one, I feel sicker! Hope u've recovered from the trauma and mum is getting better.

I completely agree that we do need a 180 degrees changes in the way of running our hospitals. On a seperate note I just love going to hospitals. I enjoy giving our fellow nurses and doctors a hard time :P

Hi Dhaneesha,

Welcome to the world of blogging. Wish you all the very best and keep up with the posts.

I read ur article and the comments (except for the last few), I disagree on some points.

"as the nurses came at work at 9hr" ---> IMHO, it's false because my elder sister is a nurse at the Candos hospital and she has to report to work at 7.00 a.m or at latest 7.30 a.m.

Not all hospitals are like that... I myself had a minor surgical operation(Civil Hosptital) some years ago, my uncle had open heart surgery(North Hospital), my maternal grandma suffers from cardiac problems (ICU-Civil Hospital) and we were properly treated at the hospitals and the proper care was given.

About patient's file being lost, that's quite obvious because hosptitals are still using the old method --> paper filing.

It's high time the government and para-statal bodies computerise their systems...ouff, kan zot pu compran??

The problem that you have encountered is out of mis-management and bad communication.

24hrs of no eating before an operation was for her best because with the chloroform which would have been used afterwards, she could suffer from other complications like vomitting etc...But not doing the operation on the required day shows total lack of responsibility...because mo pense pa ki sa jour la gramatin ki zot ine koner la salle operation pu en reparation.

Seizing this space to share about irresponsibility of Candos Hospital: One of my family members suffer from Cancer and recently she to go through another set of radiotherapy sessions at Candos hosptital. And to our dismay, we get to hear "l'apareil chauffer en panne, bizin reparer" for several consecutive days...my comment was " kan zot koner l'appareil la bizin reparer, b repare li bane movais imbeciles... dimoune malade la li p souffert li "

Anyways, I think the problem is with the Candos hospital and the people working there. They are not competent at all and they do not fit that position.

That's all I have to say...

Cheers

Chaya

Bravo pour ton blog. Tu devras donner un cours aux 2 vieilles du buro (Dor et moi).
Ton article reflète malheureusement la réalité mauricienne; ce qui vient encore une fois confirmer cette fameuse phrase de Animal Farm: "all animals are equal but some are more equal than others"

Hi Dhan,

Hope your mom is doing fine. Well...even my mom suffered from fibroms and she was in last stage and could develop a cancer. Finally one doc from hops itself decided to operate her...another story and good example is that of Moka hospital...and am a 'temoin' to the fact how the assistant nurses are rude, mal poli, sauvage et grand noir. Several time my mom got a clash from them. And you kno wat? mom is a NURSING OFFICER.

1 thing am proud of my mom is that she never seeks favour when she goes on her appointments. I agree that some nurses and doc are very sauvage...but please dont put all of them in one basket.

Many time mom has saved lives of patients in medical ward....waiting for the docs to react would simply end in calling the patient's family to announce death of the patient!!!!

Despite mom being in the field...memebers of my family have witnessed how some medical staff do...especially the assitant nurses ki declare pli nurse ki nurse....

@Chaya--->Hospitals providing good care?well, of course, but only if you do know doctors there..Then only you will have a "best" service.
Else, my dogs get a better treatment{money makes you get a good treatment} when they go to their respective vet than some people who are mistreated at hospitals.
